I do my best to educate myself on new products that come out. I don’t want to tell my clients they can incorporate something into their diet if I don’t know anything about it. What I didn’t realize is there are certain ingredients that may not kick me out of ketosis, but might for someone else. And, vice versa.
The past few weeks I have been indulging in a treat almost every other day. I have been enjoying this product so much. I bought a full case so my children could have a sweet treat guilt free as well! The product is a bit higher in net carbs than I would normally put into my day, but OMG it was worth skimping on something else to fit these into my macros! I do not weigh myself so when my favorite jeans were uncomfortable this weekend I became a little concerned.
As soon as I could I weighed myself. UP 4 pounds! I knew immediately what caused it. I grabbed a package and checked the ingredients again. What could it be? Tapioca starch!!! Now, this may not affect some people, but it absolutely has a negative effect on me. I tested myself after consuming the product and BOOM! Out of ketosis!
This means I have been knocking myself in and out of ketosis for about 3 weeks now. I should have known something was up. I have been feeling more tired than usual, super cranky and experiencing some joint pain. This goes back to, “listen to your body!” When did I stop paying attention and let my sweet tooth run my diet? I am so aggravated at myself.
This product is a keto fail for me, but might not be for you. On occasion I will put a Splenda in my coffee if I forgot to bring my own Stevia. This does not knock me out of ketosis. There are plenty of people that even a half a packet can affect their glucose level. The best way to know if a product is ok for you is to use a blood monitor. A breath monitor is a decent second choice and the urine strips in my opinion are a waste.
So, while I had a huge keto fail and I had a personal victory. Normally, I would beat myself up for making a mistake. Not today! Today, I learned from this and will not do it again. I will test myself after trying a new product and see how it affects me. I will pass my knowledge onto my followers and clients hoping they will not make the same mistake I made.
After nearly two years living a ketogenic lifestyle I got lazy. Lazy doesn’t work. Laziness fuels more laziness. I fell off the keto police bandwagon and literally jumped right back on this morning! Back to measuring and testing. I am not worried about the 4 pounds. I know I will have those off by the end of the week. That’s who I am, but there will be no more new products without testing.
