Autoimmune Protocol Diet AIP

I have been telling my clients how living a ketogenic lifestyle has changed my life.  By this I mean I no longer suffer terribly from lupus flare-ups and my stomach isn’t on fire every time I eat.  This lifestyle works great for me, but when people hear how much fat they have to consume they freak out.  So, in true Danielle fashion I began to do some research.  I knew there had to be a variation and I found it!  The AIP (Autoimmune Protocol) diet.

The AIP diet is designed to help reduce inflammation in the body to relieve symptoms of autoimmune disorders.  It eliminates foods that cause inflammation in the gut and promotes eating nutrient rich foods.  The basic premise of this diet is to reset the immune system, prevent an autoimmune response, reduce symptoms of autoimmune diseases and prevent the occurrence of secondary autoimmune diseases.

Another thought on the AIP diet is that it is aimed at treating leaky gut.  Some people believe that autoimmune diseases may be caused by small holes in the intestines.  These holes allow food to be released into the body causing the immune system to react.

The AIP diet is very restrictive.  Most people try it for several weeks and then begin adding restricted foods back in slowly to see which ones cause their body an inflammatory response.  You need to follow the strict eating plan for 2-3 months before adding restricted foods back in.

When doing an elimination diet test it is important to give your body enough time to clean out and reset itself before adding restricted foods back in.  I recommend at least 2 months and then once a week adding in one new food.  You will need to monitor if your body has a reaction.  If it does, remove it from your diet forever.

I like this diet for multiple reasons.  It follows the same premise as the keto diet, but avoiding all the fat people fear.  It makes you create a customized food protocol specific to you.  All inflammatory foods are removed from your diet which will give you relief.  You will begin to feel in control of your diet.  I can list so many more, but I think you get it.  Imagine feeling better just from changing your diet!!!
